My Favorite Movies Of 2017

Towards the end of every year, I reflect on my favorite books, movies, and television from the past year and share what I’m most anticipating in the new year. Today we’re talking about my favorite movies of 2017!

For a full deep dive into each film, check out my Favorite Movies Of 2017 video, below:

Beauty and the Beast

Starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, Beauty and the Beast was a strong, feminist reworking of the original animated movie, even making Belle an inventor like her father. Emma Watson also surprisingly had a lovely singing voice.

Headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron, Baywatch was a ton of fun. It’s a heightened, action-packed movie where lifeguards are more like heroes of the beach.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I am Groot! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is everything I hoped it would be: a hilarious, action-packed, and even heartfelt space adventure featuring our favorite rag tag group of anti-heroes. Baby Groot steals the show by being too adorable for words. Up next we’ll see the team collide with the Avengers in Avengers 3: Infinity War.

Wonder Woman

Director Patty Jenkins and actress Gal Gadot deserve all of the recognition for Wonder Woman. The film is the first DC movie in years to get almost unanimous praise. To have this film be directed by a woman is a complete win, from the Amazonian armor to Diana’s straight-forward, powerful, and compassionate nature. We need more movies like this one.

Captain Underpants

I grew up on Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey so to see the book series turned into an animated movie was a delight! Featuring voices by Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, and more, Captain Underpants tells the story of two elementary school pranksters, comic book creators, and best friends who accidentally turn their mean principal into their iconic superhero Captain Underpants. Complete with potty humor and comic book stylizing straight out of the book, this film was a boat load of nostalgic fun.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the Spider-Man film we’ve been waiting for. With the casting of Tom Holland, we finally have a teenage Peter Parker/Spider-Man who we can hopefully follow for years to come. As a new hero, Peter is mentored by his idol Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr). This iteration also puts a spin on superhero movies by crossing it with the quintessential teen movie genre.
